Issue 48: September/October 2010 - out now!

Should the arts be seen simply as tools to foster development in children with special needs, or should we look as well at the opportunities for these young people to explore themselves fully as artists? This question was thrown into sharp relief by a remarkable exhibition earlier this year at a renowned Oxford art gallery, featuring the works of students with autistic spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and multiple learning disabilities. In a major feature on the arts and SEN, Anne Louise Avery tells the story of this groundbreaking creative project and we showcase some of the students’ exciting and insightful works.

Every Child Matters (ECM) was one of Labour’s flagship education programmes. Now, as the new coalition sets out its priorities, we ask ECM specialist Katherine Runswick-Cole if the programme has worked and where its future lies.

Plus, Jane McConnell takes an in-depth look at statements of SEN, Phil Craig adopts a positive approach to behaviour management and Mark Atkinson asks how children with autism will fare under the Government’s controversial academy programme.

Also in this issue, you will find features on dyspraxia, dealing with bereavement, school visits, tackling abuse, attachment disorder, adoption, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia and choosing the right school for a child with SEN.
